Open Coffee Alkmaar stimulates Indian education
As an employee at the Indian development office of Bridge I was asked to help the local community with money gathered by the members of Open Coffee Alkmaar, The Netherlands. Obviously this was my chance to return the favor and find a good cause. On December 30th I went together with my colleague Sukesh to the Saandhwanam Charitable Society. http://www.saandhwanam.org/
Meenu is a twenty-one year young woman who lost both of her parents four years ago. She was being cared for by her grandmother but without any noteworthy income life was not easy. She now lives at the Saandhwanam Charitable Society just outside of Kochi while studying Civil Engineering at the Holy mother school. On February first she would have had to stop her studies due to a lack of funding but fortunately I had the opportunity to meet her and present the 10.000 Rupee donation of the Open Coffee members. Now Meenu is able to continue her studies for at least another semester.

From a conversation with Meenu it became clear that she is doing good now. She lives together with forty other children of whom she is the oldest. Meenu studies Civil Engineering at the Holy Mother School and loves the materials and drawing. She started this program in September 2010 which takes three years to finish. According to a volunteer at the orphanage Meenu is doing very well at school. Off course there is more than only studying for Meenu; after school she loves listening to music and dancing. When I told her that we would like to pay her tuition fee for the next semester her eyes turned slightly watery and a big smile appeared. “Thank you very much!”
Even after this donation we are able to help another person with the donations from Open Coffee Alkmaar. You can read more about this in a following article.
On behalf of Meenu and myself: Thank you so much Open Coffee Members, keep up the good work!
