Open Coffee Hoorn is a popular club
Zwaag – ‘the visitors came from all corners and holes’ laughs Maikel Kok. The initiator of the Hoorn department of the Open Coffee Club was surprised by the overwhelming amount of interest for the first network event.
The guests entered the foyer of the theater ‘Het Park’ from different entrances. ‘Little before 9:30 am, we were with 4 people. Here we go I thought. A little later it was completely full. I expect it to become even more crowded, because the reactions were very positive’.
With the first meeting, on the last Friday in january, there were about hundred people.

With the first meeting, on the last Friday in january, there were about hundred people. The amount was bigger than in Alkmaar’s restaurant ‘Het Gulden Vlies’, where Kok started the club in October. At the same month, he also started in Schagen.
Open Coffee Club is an international organization, which originates in London. Saul Klein, one of the founders of skype, got the idea. He envisioned stimulating entrepreneurship by assembling representatives of the business world. At first, mainly employers from the IT world were participating. Nowadays, the only common nominator is that all people use a computer, quite broad criteria.
Kok is active for Bridge, a company from the digital world in Zwaag. ‘I often visited network meetings. I was driving in the traffic jam mornings and evenings, so I thought it would be better if people came to me. I live in Heerhugowaard, was working at Multikabel and had many relations in Alkmaar. Hence our first open coffee event was there.’
According to Kok, the Open Coffee Club differentiates itself from similar initiatives. ‘We have very low barriers. You don’t need to be accepted by others or pay money. There are no company presentations. It is all without rules or big commitment.’
The club has its own website where visitors can introduce each other. They can show their cv and work. ‘This way, the guests can make an appointment with each other beforehand to meet up’. Kok says the open coffee meetings are an efficient way of increasing the order-portfolio. ‘Many people visit who open up the doors to their companies. That is more focused then sending a mailing’.
He thinks the meetings answer their goals. ‘I spoke to someone in Hoorn who wanted to do business in Ukraine. Coincidentally, Bridge also has an office in that country. I could warn this man for the hidden traps which we already experienced. In Alkmaar, I could link a lingerie shop owner to a visitor who is active in the world of publicity’.
