The past few weeks we have spent substantial time trying to figure out how we can best use Twitter to the benefit of our customers. In this article, I want to share some of the information we came across.
Initially I didn’t see the purpose of telling the world what I am doing (which is the initial concept of the service). But after investing a little time I see the opportunities for branding and sharing information that is relevant for your network. Twitter has recently launched a guide on the advantages of Twitter for businesses: http://business.twitter.com/twitter101/

Most companies are already active on blogs, linkedin, business clubs, seminars, etc and share their knowledge with their network. So writing on Twitter should be a natural thing. This Mashable article gives some guidelines: http://mashable.com/2009/07/27/twitter-corporate-culture/

It is more easy to use a desktop application to communicate through Twitter then using the web interface. I find Tweetdeck most convenient as it also provides you the possibility to retweet interesting articles inside the application. It also gives you retweets, answers and even posts on facebook in one interface. It can be downloaded here: http://tweetdeck.com/beta/
Because most business people don’t spend all day on Twitter, it can be useful to schedule the posts. I normally posted everything I found within 10 minutes, resulting in a big list of Tweets and then silence for several days. To create brand awareness, it may be wiser to appear more regularly. This tool enables you to schedule them and appear more regularly: http://futuretweets.com
Shortening Urls
A very usefull tool is http://bit.ly/. This tool is built in in Tweetdeck. The main advantage in my opinion is the ability to track the amount of clicks on the url that you posted in your article.
Twitter & SEO
As search engines start indexing Twitter content, the messages that you post on Twitter should be wisely chosen. I find that this article from Mashable gives a clear overview of ‘what to do’: http://mashable.com/2009/06/25/twitter-seo-tips/
