Welcome to the world of Eastern Europe
You’re probable not very familiar with the ins and outs of Ukraine. For our Dutch, German, Swedish and Indian colleagues this was also an unknown area. Now that we are working together, things are clearer. Let me share this with you too.
Ukraine was part of the USSR and didn’t exist as a separate country. Now it’s the biggest country of Europe in size and 47 million people live in this country. What me and my partners did know, was that Ukraine has a huge potential for nearshore outsourcing from Western Europe. I want to describe Ukraine’s history and culture shortly in this article, because I think it is interesting for our (prospective) customers to get a feeling of the country. Then I will describe the attractions of Ukraine as an outsourcing destination and show Bridge’s office in Odessa.

History & culture of Ukraine
When Ukraine was a part of the USSR, it was a great industrial and cultural centre, with highly developed industry and a great number of universities. In 1991 Ukraine became a sovereign state. During the first years of independence Ukraine survived a slump, as a result of broken connections with other post soviet republics, the consequences of which were inflation and unemployment. In 90th the economy became more stable, new Constitution was adopted, national currency was introduced (UAH), industry started developing.
Important changes happened not only in economy, but also in the outlook of people. Ukrainians learnt to perceive their country not as a part of Russia, but as a separate country with its own traditions and culture. Historically Ukraine is divided into Western Ukraine and Eastern Ukraine. In the West people speak Ukrainian, in the East they prefer Russian, but all of them understand both languages very well.
Representatives of different nations live in Ukraine; they consider themselves to be Ukrainians notwithstanding cultural differences. Thanks to the effort of accepting other cultures there never have been conflicts connected with national differences in Ukraine.
Benefits of outsourcing to Ukraine
Ukraine has until today not applied for entrance into to European Union. Because of this, Ukraine is and will stay the most attractive destination in Eastern Europe for outsourcing. The salaries and other costs will stay lower then neighboring countries like Romania and Poland (where outsourcing rates have grown substantially since the entrance into the EU).
There is a simplified system of taxation for small business in Ukraine. It gives the opportunity to decrease expenses connected with taxes and consequently to cut down the cost price.
Another important factor for both rates and availability of skilled people is the 47 million people living in Ukraine. IT related studies have become popular since the surge of outsourcing, which ensures a steady stream of new people that enter the labor market in the decades to come.
Territorially Ukraine is a part of Europe. If you plan to visit Ukraine you will need just some hours to fly to Odessa or Kyiv from any European capital. Moreover, the citizens of EU don’t need to get any visa. The difference in time is only one hour, it allows working simultaneously.
Bridge Ukraine
Me (Dmitry) and my brother (Yuri) started working in 2006 as a web-studio (The Vostok), having the staff of 2 people. The company has been growing, accumulating experience and skills. End of 2007, we started Bridge Ukraine Ltd. Nowadays the staff comprises of 15 people, 10 of them are programmers and designers.
In addition to website creation, Bridge Ukraine is focused on developing flash games, interactive presentations, banners and content management systems. Besides, several programmers work as a dedicated team for our customers. These programmers work directly with the costumer and we make sure this cooperation is streamlined and successful.
The world gets smaller and smaller, and eastern and western Europe come closer to each other every day. We believe in working together as world citizens. And I would say…come and visit Odessa once. It’s a beautiful city on the shore of the black sea. To enjoy the beach, the beautiful women and eat our famous soup, borscht. And of course you’re more than welcome to drink fine vodka with us.
Cheers!
